(Hence the clever "virgin" title - my spam box ought to start filling up with weird comments, now).

However, in 4 days I will be doing my second triathlon, I'm now 41 and rapidly running out of time to post anything before I head over there.

My first sprint tri was 750 m swim/20 km bike/5 km run. See here for my results. Training for it was sporadic but my swim would prove to need much improvement. I didn't fear the open waters, but the distance and effort proved a struggle; I was front crawling, back crawling, breast stroking (hmm more spam fodder there). The bike went fairly well, I was breathing hard the whole way, and the run sort of coasted into the finish line at an even pace.

I felt my next target should be an olympic distance but I was convinced by my "coach"/brother that half-Ironman was within my reach. So I've been training for about 18 weeks towards that goal. This distance is Ironman 70.3 or Swim 2km, Bike 90km, Run 21km.

I feel great about the swim, bike and run, although I feel my cycling could use some improvement in efficiency, but I've run out of time to do any more tweaking. I've purchased a new set of tri-shorts (last ones destroyed by chlorine) and new cycling shoes within the last week, so I'm risking introducing too many changes without testing properly. I've been wearing them during my work commute, but that's hardly the same conditions. Hopefully I'll have some time the day before the race to fine tune any shoe positioning. I've got a hand-me-down sleeveless wet suit this time and makes a huge difference in my swim effort. My in-laws have a trailer on a nice little lake about 350m long so I have done a laps there a few times to mimic the 2K swim.

I'm predicting around a 6 hour time, so hopefully I can post a good race report, and much sooner this time around.

World Community Grid

You may have heard of Folding@Home or Protein Folding projects which use spare time from your computer for science calculations. Then one day it didn't. I clicked on Windows XP's Hibernate button in the Start, Turn off computer menu. The computer hibernates, and then restarts, instead of turning off.

To the Google machine! Hmm, I find a few other reports of people with a similar problem even in Windows Vista. Like these articles: Reboots from Hibernate - Flexbeta and Hibernate won't power off...it' restarts!. No solutions there.

I hadn't installed any new software or updated drivers, so those suggestions did not apply. I considered the USB tree, and tried unplugging some devices to see if they affected the reboot after hibernate. They didn't.

Then I eyed my APC Back-Ups... It uses a com port instead of USB. A week ago I had disconnected the battery because the UPS indicated it was bad. I could live with the UPS essentially being a surge protector, but it would beep insistently and long at random times. There is perfectly good error light on the unit which is labeled "battery bad".

Anyways, if you have read this far you deserve a solution. Unplug the UPS from the computer (or replace the battery). Problem solved and hibernate works. I plug the com cable back in and the reboot problem reappears.

My guess is the UPS is indicating that there is some kind of problem so the UPS service prevents a shutdown. It seems backwards since a hibernate would be safer than running on a UPS with a failed battery.

If you do not have a UPS, I would try the solutions in the links above, or look at your USB devices. In Windows' Device Manager, some devices allow you to check off whether it's safe to power them down, so a USB device could hold a system hostage that way.

Bike Up racks me up

I had a great experience with a company called Bike-Up Bicycle Parking Systems Inc. out of Nepean, Ontario, recently that I wanted to share. I had been searching for over a month for a 3-5 bicycle rack for work so we no longer had to double lock bikes or fight over the one hitching pin affixed to the building. Their standard 4-ring rack (at right) was a little big, so they custom made a 2-ring version. I didn't choose the powder coat as I wasn't sure what colour would fit the best where it was being installed, so we may add some colour later.

They were great at answering my questions, and the time from order to delivery may vary, but in my case, it was less than a week! What a great experience after "dealing" with another company who after two feedback attempts and a voicemail, did not have the courtesy to call back. I even had to go to the City of Kingston to find a local bike rack manufacturer. I asked my own city where they sourced theirs, and did not receive a reply.

HTML Editor

I've developed a handful of web sites (mine is woefully out of date) and I help maintain one at my job using Dreamweaver, but I wanted to give some free site editors a try. NVU looked to be a good contender, and as a WYSIWYG editor it's not bad - however, it has mangled enough pages to put me off from using it as my primary editor, especially with the CSS editor. I've tried a few text-based HTML editors, and one that rises to the top is HTML-KIT. It has many shortcuts for HTML code and even includes a rudimentary FTP and file client, so I can stay within HTML-KIT and do most functions. It's integrated with HTML Tidy so I can code without worrying about formatting, then clean it up for readability and standards compliance. I have a bit of work to fine tune the site, especially for more consistent CSS styles.

You can see my results at my friend's web site Trump Homes. I've put my Google skills to use and for a brief time it was the #1 search results on "trump homes" (without the quotes). With the quotes, it is #1 on Google and Yahoo search. Other search engines, such as AOL and AllTheWeb appear to use Google and Yahoo, respectively, so they're already covered. I will pair up my phone with my PC using a PIN and the connection will work... until sometime in the future when no manner of unpairing and disabling Bluetooth both on the phone and on the PC will get them to talk. Restarting the computer would probably help, but that's not a workable option as I would have to reload all my programs. The error message on the phone (a Nokia 6133) will be something like "Bluetooth connection not available". The PC will time out even after a successful pairing. My phone will even be "connected" but won't talk (in this case I'm trying to synchronize. I use a Jabra A320s USB Bluetooth device.

However, I have found a way to reset the connection without having to restart the computer. This is with the Nokia PC Suite, so your mileage may vary with other devices. In the PC Suite, go to Manage Connections, and uncheck the Bluetooth (WIDCOMM) option, and check it off again. Click on Close and reconnect your device. If you are using the Synchronise application, you may have to use the Phone Selector to re-select your phone.

[Update] Alas, it was too good to be true. This fix does not immediately work sometimes. You must also unpair the device in your Bluetooth Places, and pair it again. On that note, I find it annoying with my Nokia 6133 that it does not recognize more than one computer. If I sync at work, and take it home, it uses the same computer name/sync pair. So if the passwords do not match, the sync does not work.

Manually synchronize Nokia 6133 and Google Calendar

Work in progress... but I wanted to post it to start a dialog.

I've discovered you can export calendar data from the Nokia 6133 (which I believe is compatible with the 6126) to Google Calendar, and with a few edits, vice versa, using your Bluetooth connection and a PC.

One of my criteria is that I want to transfer calendar data without using web services or packet data connection. I realize this is probably very old school but I have disabled web access on my phone. This guy gets it..

First, establish a Bluetooth connection (this is a separate topic in and of itself). Set up OBEX Object Push. Enable My PIM Item transfer.

Select a calendar item on the phone. Choose Options and send via Bluetooth. Log in to Google calendar and import the .VCS file.

To export from Google Calendar, select your calendar options and use the private ICS link to save a local file in iCalendar format of events. Edit the file to remove the extra data before BEGIN:VEVENT otherwise you will see an OPP error on import. Save and rename the files with extension .VCS. Drag the file to your OBEX link, and the phone should indicate calendar event received.

It would appear that the Nokia only reads the first event. Subsequent events can be imported by deleting the first event and repeating the drag/drop process.

[edited Feb. 2]

Nerd Score

I probably shouldn't admit this:
<img src="http://www.nerdtests.com/images/ft/nq.php?val=8729" alt="I am nerdier than 76% of all people. I searched for the error message and most entries pointed to CD problems or MDAC corruption. I was installing a downloaded file, so the CD access problems did not apply. I applied the latest MDAC upgrades (in this case 2.81), but that did not help either. I even used the CSREPAIR tool which cleans up MDAC and JET problems, but that did not help, nor did the Windows Installer Cleanup tool.

I re-downloaded the file, fearing corruption, but that did not help. When I tried to install Apache which was also an .MSI installer, and it too had the same problem, there was something else going on.

It turned out to be a permissions problem. I had created a shared folder with access only by users. I probably explicitly removed all other admin/system accounts, and therein lied the problem. By removing SYSTEM, when the installer tried to run from account which did have access to the file and started to run it, it turned the file over to a system account "Windows Installer" which did not.

To solve the problem, I gave the root folder SYSTEM read access, and then the install was able to complete successfully. The subfolders inherited the needed permission.

Edited: Oct, 2007
For a different twist, see Stasheg's comment below on copying the file to your Desktop. This method would write the file into a folder with your own permissions. However, if you do not have administrator access, or SYSTEM permissions in your Desktop folder, this may not work.

Edited: Mar, 2008
Another comment suggests "giving SYSTEM full access to the temp directory". Of course, there are often several, so try %WINDIR%\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp.

Edited: Mar, 2009
As Meiki has said, a SUBST drive can cause a similar problem. I too have run into a printer driver which fails to save to a SUBST drive because it cannot see it using SYSTEM credentials. So in that case, running it from the original location or copying to an accessible folder should help.

Coyote Linux / BrazilFW Update

I previously wrote about my Coyote Linux set up here. I did switch to BrazilFW on my home system, but I wanted to post a stat from my work system:

System Information

Kernel Version

2.4.30

Machine

i686 unknown

Current Date and Time

Wed Mar 29 13:15:02 EST 2006

Uptime

13:15:02 up 197 days, 2:42

197 days, that's pretty cool; the D-Link router that we were using had to be restarted every week to keep it stable.
I started using BrazilFW when I noticed that uTorrent was maxing out my connections and causing limited internet access. When it had the same problem as Coyote Linux, I had to tweak the system to maximize the connections, while minimizing the connection problems. In the end I limited uTorrents number of connection, and increased BrazilFW concurrent connections.

The 486 I am using only has 8 Meg so it's probably below minimum requirements, but I can probably tweak some more usage out of it if I remove the Web interface. As well, if I switch to the IDE version, that may remove the necessity for extracting the floppy image to RAM. (Not sure about that one).

PopFile Review

I wrote about my e-mail classification program, PopFile in my E-mail/Spam solution entry. Since there are few reviews of PopFile, I am publishing the results of six months of classification (June 1, 2005 to November 30). The results are pretty impressive. Drawn from a sample of over 46000 messages, the accuracy is over 99% and approaching 100%.
The messages were hand-classified and are from more than one e-mail account (including one Hotmail account), with the majority of non-spam being work-related messages of a software technical nature. There is a large sample of "bounce" messages which stem from spammer(s) forging the domain name to send messages, and various types of bounces (spam filters, address not found). That would be the subject of another article, but I did not keep statistics on that.

The "buckets" are pretty straight-forward, with "win" being Windows related, "net" being network/domain related. The "ad" bucket is a but of a misnomer as it refers to blatant adult related messages. Most of those types of messages are now classified as spam instead. The "spam-virus" can either be messages already processed by Norton Antivirus and the attachment removed, or obvious virus type messages with attachments that were not caught by the antivirus.

To calculate the spam hit rate I took out the false positives and negatives to come up with a score of .992, the ham strike rate is .003 (false negatives only). PopFile doesn't include the unclassified value in its calculation so it claimed 99.65% accurate.

It doesn’t have a screen, or touch buttons, and it is over 5 years old, and cost $30. How is this possible? I give you, the Radio Shack 15-1994 6-in-1 Smart A/V Remote.

Of course, Radio Shack in Canada is now, “The Source, by Circuit City”, and this remote is no longer sold, but what it has is a feature called, JP1 . This allows me to program the remote from my computer. There is a whole group of people at yahoogroups who have set up software and spreadsheets to assist with this. I created a cable using their instructions and started tinkering.

My current routine when I get a new device (not that often, mind you) is to learn the features I need from the new remote, program it in, and never use the manufacturers remote again. I can program macros (a sequence of button presses), timers (e.g. for a commercial mute for 120 seconds) and “punch-throughs” which allow me to be in DVD mode and control the Audio system’s volume.
Current devices I control are:
Sony TV
Sony Stereo
JVC Stereo
RCA DVD
Sharp VCR

I try to "give back" by posting new devices I have programmed, so others may copy them and use in their own remotes.

There is a newer model, the 15-2117 I think, which is an 8-in-1 that I purchased for my dad when it was on sale for $40. It does have an LCD which helps while programming. That remote was set up purely using codes known by the remote, and the learning feature for codes it didn't (like the screen projector). His needs are more simpler, and the only macro is on that turns on the projector, audio, and satellite. (Pressing it again turns all of those devices off).

E-mail/Spam solution

I've settled on three tools to help me deal with e-mail:

PopTray
FreePOPs
POPFile

They are all open-source, and all are SourceForge projects. SourceForge is "the world's largest development and download repository of Open Source code and applications".
PopTray is my front-end and polls my e-mail accounts, and presents new messages or throught the use of rules, handles them how I like. I tell it to delete spam messages, and suppress notifications of low-priority messages. High priority messages get a special sound or pop-up message.

POPFile is the classification tool that identifies which categories an e-mail falls into. For example: spam, personal, work, tech. After training, it is very accurate. Here are my latest stats:

Classification Accuracy

Messages classified:

43,743

Classification errors:

141

Accuracy:

99.67%

(Last Reset: Wed Jun 1 10:29:05 2005 )

Only 0.33% of my mail is mis-classified. When that happens I teach POPFile the proper "bucket" for an e-mail. This did require a bit of training at first, but now it Just Works.

Lastly FreePOPs allows me to check GMail, Hotmail and Yahoo from POPTray as if they were real POP accounts. Since those three sites (that I use, there are many others supported) are webmail based, FreePOPs will scan through my messages and pass them on to POPTray. They take a detour through POPFile to be classified first.

Works for me!

Google listing

I'm #1! I'm #1!

It took a while, but I am finally #1 in the Google listing when searching for my name. Even without quotes around the name! Check it out: google listing . I probably owe some of it to my recent listing on Paul Schindler's column . Hopefully that doesn't change since he has moved to a Movable Type column. He may be cross-posting on both, which won't hurt.

I was worried that my poker tournament software listing was hurting my Google ranking, as it might be seen as a gambling site. Read more about that software in my archives.

When I was listed on Rogers Webspace, I did have #1 ranking, although that site had frames which was not search friendly; and I never changed the noframes section to reflect better content. I lost all rankings when Rogers switched to Yahoo and Geocities, even when I forwarded my pages to the new one for a while. My old pages are actually still available at: webarchive.org . Hopefully, Blogger.com stays around much longer so I don't have to move the site around. At least it can stay permanent while my static site moves around, and I just link to it from here. (It's link is at the side).

I'm also tweaking the site to come up with better "posting" so the "Read more" only shows up when there is more to read...

Coyote Linux

For a home firewall I use Coyote Linux personal firewall (CL firewall). It runs off a single floppy disk and handles my needs. I use an old 486-33 VLBus with 16M Ram. There is no hard drive in the system, just a floppy drive, the motherboard, video and network cards (two).

I have also installed this at work where the network is shared by between 5-10 people at a time. As I write this, the uptime is 45 days, 51 min, which is an improvement over the old D-Link hub. It needed to be restarted weekly to keep the internet connection running. It runs over PPPoE (DSL).

My next step is to all dynamic dns updating to both firewalls, currently I use DynSite at work and at home I use the Official Windows Update Client - DynDNS Updater. I actually didn't know it was the official client until I wrote this article, I had settled on it after my own research. I don't let it run all the time, I have it scheduled to run every two weeks or at boot up; and only to update if changed, or 28 days have passed. The latter is one requirement of any modification to the CL firewall, that it must force an update. If not, the address can be dropped by DynDNS.org and must be re-registered. (It has happened to me once, luckily my preferred IP name had not been taken during the lapse.)
I may upgrade to the BrazilFW made by Claudio Roberto Cussuol who has taken on maintaining the floppy disk version. Vortech Consulting is moving on to IDE based or CD based versions only of the personal firewall (plus their commercial versions).

I love being able to re-use old hardware for this purpose; I know you can buy router/firewalls for under $100 but really, you get what you pay for. We ended up tossing ours at work because it was so unreliable. The CL firewall is much more robust, and configurable, especially in its port forwarding and DHCP server abilities. I also like the DNS caching, which improves internet performance.

Sharp ZQ-6300M

Long time ago, in a tech world far away, I bought a Sharp Electronic Organizer. (Turns out it doesn't organize your life automatically, you actually have to have some discipline to use it!) When I got married back in 1999 I gained a more intelligent organizer, my wife.

I had almost all the gadgets, a PC-Link, external battery pack, all of which cost dearly at the time. The battery pack I only purchased because the CR2032 batteries were so expensive ($7-9 each times 4). It could use AA batteries, of which I had plenty rechargables. The PC-Link uses so much power to transfer it shortens battery life, so thinking it would help that's when I bought the battery pack.

I found out the hard way that when there isn't enough power for the main batteries, the battery pack is useless. I tucked away the organizer, pack and cables and sort of forgot about them for a while. Fast forward to five years later, I stumble across them and set about to see what, if anything, was left on it.
After cleaning out the corroded alkaline batteries in the external battery pack, I put in some fresh ones, tested the voltage, and plugged it in. I hit the On button and ... nothing. I fiddled with the batteries, checked the output voltage, which only needed to be 6.4 volts. You would think that 6 AA batteries X 1.5 volts = 9 volts would be more than enough. Even if some were the 1.25 volt rechargeables, that would still be 7.5 volts. But, no, no power. I nearly damaged the On button trying to coax some life out of the organizer. I hooked up a universal DC adapter to the external battery pack so I knew for sure there was enough power, but still no life.

Remember what I said about the main power? I checked the voltage on the nickel batteries in the organizer, and some were negative, which couldn't be good! Some were still up there close to the 3 volts needed. I have some old computers lying around so I stole a few CR2032 batteries from those to change out the worst of the batteries, and amazingly enough, when I tried the On button, the organizer greeted me with my old address. There was still data in this sucker! (This was before memory cards) The life of the memory battery was supposed to be around 5 years, but the latest entry was from 1998, and this was now 2005.

My first step was to look up the combination for a lock that I had forgotten. (I spent a couple hours one time trying numbers that I had known in different sequences). It worked! My next step was to immediately back up all the data to a computer. First I had to reinstall the DOS only software on a computer. The backup was successful, but then I realized I hadn't turned off the Secret Mode so it was not a complete backup. So I did that and then realized that the backup could only be used to restore to the organizer. So, next I did a download of the data so I could look at it off-line. I spent a few minutes reminiscing through the data to see what was there, then finally turned off the unit.

I returned the batteries back to the computer and a remote control I had pilfered, and bought $1 pack at the dollar store (for three batteries!) I noticed that the electronics store still sold them for $4-5 each but I'm sure those would last longer. I just needed enough to power up the unit enough to switch to the external battery.

So, now I just have to see if it is worth actually using again. It's nothing like a Palm, with only 128K RAM and no user loadable software, but it's something. I should at least get the $400-500 out of it that I paid for!

London Balloon Festival 2005

I love watching the balloons go up, up and away. It took me three attempts to find one that works on an old Pentium 133 I've inherited, which is probably part of the problem. It only has 32 megs of RAM, but I've stripped out any graphical interfaces to run in pure text mode, so once I start to get things set up I can check whether it is sufficient. I haven't used much in the way of Unix/Linux for several years so I'm relying on documentation pretty heavily.

I started with a mini distribution of Mandrake 10.1 that I had burned to CD a while ago, for this purpose. It installed, but would continuously reboot after LILO and when starting initrd. So I scrapped that, and tried University Linux. It installed fine and booted fine. However, when I tried to run MisterHouse, it was not up to the task (improper Perl versions, etc). It didn't take kindly to XAMPP Linux either.

Success was found with RedHat 2.1 which I had on CD. I had purchased a book a year or two back about Linux (in the bargain bin), and I think it has version 2.0.x so it's not a recent kernel. However, it does match the hardware in historical terms. Misterhouse extracted fine and started to load. The configuration needs heavy work, however. Lampp also extracted and attempted to configure as well.

I've skipped the steps needed for installation (such as teaching Linux to use my network card - Mandrake auto detected my ISA 3Com 5c309B but RedHat did not), and having to hang on an ATAPI CD-Rom to boot from - no way was I going to use floppies if I didn't have to. Then setting up a remote login so I don't have to work on it in the basement workshop any more.

My current hurdle is configuring Samba to make it easier to transfer my settings from a Windows 98 server running MisterHouse, as well as make the CDs available for use. This computer was an auto mechanic's server, so it has 4 CD-Rom drives tied in with SCSI, that used to run library software. The 3rd and 4th drives are hosted in a custom box with only a SCSI plug and power plug. The main unit is built much like the IBM PS/2's used to be, with a custom rise to attach the ISA and PCI cards.

About

My first post is a plug/link to my main home page: http://ca.geocities.com/rsleegers
I hope to post two software programs shortly, Tournament Poker Software and My Scheduler
which are, respectively, an on screen tracker for players in a poker tournament (great if you have a projector or large tv), and a task scheduler replacement. Please note that the poker software only tracks scores and winnings, and has no game play, so should not be considered casino software.

More to come.
